About Maruyama Sensei

Roberto Nobuhiko Maruyama Sensei is the founder and leader of the Maruyama Institute of Aikido, which has 25 dojos training more than 800 aikidoka across Brazil. On May 1, 2015, the Maruyama Institute received Aikikai Hombu Official Recognition for the promotion and dissemination of Aikido in Brazil. Maruyama Sensei was awarded his 7th degree black belt in January 2015 by the Aikikai Foundation (Hombu Dojo - Tokyo, Japan), the first native Brazilian to receive this rank. He has close ties to Hombu Dojo, Masakazu Kitahira Shihan (8th dan) and Hironobu Yamada Shihan (8th dan). From 2003 until his retirement in 2013, Maruyama Sensei served as Chief Instructor of Grupo de Operações Especiais (GOE - São Paulo Police Special Operations Group), where he trained more than 100 police officers in self defense. In 2010, he received the highest award of the Civil Police of São Paulo State, the "Jorge Tibiriça" medal for outstanding services rendered to the institution. He has also trained SWAT instructors in Miami and Orlando. Maruyama Sensei is the teacher of Philippe Wyffels Sensei of Salt Lake Aikikai.
